  5. SELECTIVE CATALYTIC HYDROGENETION

Xiaolei Fan - lecturer in Chemical Engineering at The University of Manchester, used our micro-thermocouples to investigate Selective Catalytic Hydrogenation in a Structured Compact Multifunctional Reactor. The results demonstrated that the structured compact multifunctional reactor might be a promising technology to transfer conventional heterogeneous catalysis to flow regime.

    Abstract
Selective hydrogenation is an important class of chemical reactions for the production of speciality chemicals, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals. The challenges in this type of reactions are to control selectivity in hydrogenation of poly-functional molecules, and avoid the possible risk of reaction runaway due to the high exothermisity. In this project the fundamentals

  6. MALAWI: BIOMASS FIEL USE AND INDOOR AIR POLLUTION

Air pollution from biomass fuels in Africa is a significant cause of mortality and morbidity both in adults and children. This paper by D G Fullerton, S Semple, F Kalambo, A Suseno, R Malamba, G Henderson, J G Ayres and S B Gordon describes the nature and quantity of smoke exposure from biomass fuel in Malawian homes.

    Summary
Over 2 billion people rely on biomass fuel as their main source of domestic energy. Most of these people live in developing countries such as Malawi, where more than 90% of people cook using biomass fuel (fig 1). Indoor air pollution associated with biomass fuel use is increasingly recognised as a major health concern in the developing world, responsible for an estimated 36% of mortality from respiratory disease as well as contributing to non-respiratory pathology.1 2 3 4 5 Pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children <5 years of age and the risk of pneumonia in young children is increased by exposure to unprocessed solid fuels

  7. VARIATION IN BADGER (MELES MELES) SETT MICROCLIMATE

Yayoi Kaneko - researcher at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, conducted a study on the Sett microclimate. In this study, the internal conditions of setts within five European badger (Meles meles) social groups are monitored during the cub-rearing season. Sett temperature showed substantial and significant variation over this period, while relative humidity remained stable throughout.

    Abstract
Maintaining homeothermy is essential for mammals, but has considerable energetic costs. In this study, Sett microclimate within five European badger (Meles meles) social groups during the cub-rearing season were monitored, that is, February to July, in 2004. Sett temperature showed substantial and significant variation over this period, while relative humidity remained stable throughout.

The Sett microclimate was least stable during the period for which cubs remain entirely below ground between February and April; however here the instrumented main

  8. MEASURING INTERNAL SUMMERTIME TEMPERATURE OF LEICESTER HOMES

For this research - carried out by Lomas KJ and Kane T from the School of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough University - Hobo Data loggers supplied and calibrated by Tempcon Instrumentation were used to examine internal summertime temperatures in the living and bedrooms of 282 homes in the UK city of Leicester.

This being a statistically representative sample of the city's housing stock. The monitoring period, whilst generally cool, included a short period of hot weather.

    Abstract
Internal summertime temperatures measured in 268 homes in the UK city of Leicester are reported. The hourly data was collected from living rooms and bedrooms during the summer of 2009, which was generally cool but with a short hot spell. Some household interviews were conducted. The

  9. WHERE ENERY EFFICIENCY INITIATIVES SHOULD BE TARGETED?

Hobo data loggers were calibrated and provided by Tempcon Instrumentation Ltd as part of a research programme aimed at identifying where energy efficiency initiatives should be targeted. This information is key for the accurate prediction of CO2 savings so that Government can ensure that targets are met.

Data were collected during a large-scale city-wide housing survey carried out in Leicester, UK in 2009-2010. The Living in Leicester (LIL) Survey was designed by the 4M project - Measurement, Modelling, Mapping and Management (4M): An Evidence-Based Methodology for Understanding and Shrinking the Urban Carbon Footprint – a collaboration between four Universities funded through the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (ESPRC). 4M is studying CO2 emission sources and sinks in urban areas and has collected data from households within Leicester including indoor air temperatures in domestic buildings. Households were randomly selected.

  10. WHAT'S STOPPING YOU FROM GOING WIRELESS?

Wireless technologies have been around for a while now in various guises but lately they appear to be growing in number with more and more products being added to the list of available technologies. In part this may be due to the rise of the ‘Internet of things’ (Where everyday technologies and appliances communicate with each over the internet) as more and more methods exist to connect devices either to the Internet or to each other using wireless technology.

Whatever the reason, it’s good news for data logging! Data loggers aren’t the only technology benefitting from piggybacking the wave of wireless expansion but they are definitely one whose purpose converges easily.

When we log events using a data logger we are, by definition, recording what has happened for analysis later. The moment we add the wireless dimension
