Data Logger Facts

Data Logger UK Options

There are so many data logger options that it can at first be bewildering. This simple guide will give you a good basic knowledge to help you make an informed choice.

What is a Data Logger?

A data logger is an electronic device, often with external probes or sensors and are most commonly battery-operated. All data loggers, whether they are USB data loggers or wireless, comprise a recording system, which is connected to one or more sensors. The sensor or sensors may be housed inside the data logger’s case, or they may be attached to the logger’s sensor ports via a cable. The recording system samples the sensor at intervals and stores the resulting data.

Data loggers are valuable tools for anyone who wants to continuously monitor conditions without having to be on site.

Because of the long battery life characteristic of many portable data loggers, they can be deployed for long periods of time, meaning less time spent traveling to and from the logger to download data. For remotely-placed loggers, or in situations where many loggers are used, that can be a huge savings in time and money.

Advantages of Data Loggers

Ease of use
It can take as little as 15 minutes from opening the box to deployment of a data logger; for USB data loggers, simply connect the logger to a computer, use the data logger’s software to configure the sampling frequency and start/stop times, and you’re good to go.

Reliability
Once configured and deployed, you can rely on a professional-quality battery-powered data logger to gather the information you need - no issues from human errors, bad weather, poor handwriting, or data entry errors will affect your data collection. And whether indoors or out, data loggers are rugged instruments designed to withstand a wide range of
environmental conditions, with various models built to withstand: salt water, refrigeration, or strong winds.

Time-stamped data
Collection of data is at the core of these devices, and their purpose is to provide objective, time-stamped proof of conditions over time, which can be used for research, to confirm operations, provide a record for regulatory agencies, or supply information to decision-makers.

Datalogger Communication Options

Data logger options usb bluetooth wireless

There are many communication options, but one of the most popular is the wireless data logger. The term ‘wireless’ refers to the device’s bluetooth/radio signal/WiFi/cellular internet connection.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) enabled loggers don’t even require a computer - just a mobile device and app. Downloaded data can be easily analysed, graphed, and formatted for presentation, or exported to other applications.

With non-wireless loggers, data is collected manually from the logger after a chosen period of time has elapsed. The data is downloaded ito a PC via USB cable for analysis.

Many customers choose dataloggers that allow wireless access to the data, so that they don't have to spend time physically checking the logger and downloading data. Plus, they can receive alerts via SMS text message to their phone, or by email. Web-based data logging systems enable remote, around-the-clock internet-based access to data via GSM cellular, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet communications. These systems can be configured with a variety of external plug-in sensors and transmit collected data to a secure web server for accessing the data.
Data loggers that utilise Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology measure and transmit data wirelessly to mobile devices over a 100-foot range.

Data Logger Sensor Options

Many data loggers contain internal sensors that will log commonly measured parameters such as: temperature, humidity, pressure, water level, water temperature, Air Quality/CO2, voltage, current, energy (kWh). In some cases the data logger will have multiple internal sensors that log different parameters simultaneously. The ability to log multiple parameters requires the data logger to have multiple ‘channels’. In this way, a data logger with four channels will enable four parameters to be logged simultaneously.

Data loggers that have one or more external channels can be used in conjunction with external sensors to measure and log a very wide range of parameters. The benefit of this is that you are able to customise a data logging system to suit your exact requirements.

Use the 'Measurements' filter on this page to select the parameters that you wish to monitor.

Accuracy

No matter what you need to measure, understanding your measurement accuracy requirements is essential. For example, if you’re monitoring temperature in an office space, you may only require a temperature measurement accuracy of +/- 2 degrees; while monitoring conditions for research may require far greater accuracy, for example, accuracy in the order of 0.2C is typically required.

Accuracy specifications vary widely among different types of data loggers. When looking at the accuracy specifications for a given data logger, be sure to look for specfications that indicate accuracy over the entire measurement range, not just a single value. The accuracy a data logger can attain at the high or low end of its range might be far dissimilar from the correctness at the mid point of its range. For this purpose, it is significant to find out if the logger’s accuracy description mentions a single point or the complete measurement range.
