Wind Monitoring for Construction Sites & Cranes

Wind Monitoring for Construction Sites & Cranes

Every year many accidents and millions of pounds of lost revenue occurs due to wind on construction sites. Human perception of the weather is subjective, and project risks cannot be managed based on perception. Constructions and projects involving tower cranes are especially vulnerable to strong winds as wind speed tends to increase with altitude - since there are fewer obstacles as you get higher.

Weather forecasts provide a general idea of the wind conditions that can be expected, but their data does not reflect site-specific conditions. Terrain features and surrounding constructions effect local wind patterns and a project site can experience dangerous gusts even on days when the weather forecast announces moderate winds. Only a weather monitoring system installed on-site can detect these dangerous winds.

The British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) recommends stopping all crane activity if wind gusts exceed 27 mph. Above 40 mph, the recommendation is to stop all outdoor construction, even activities that don’t involve a crane.

To be useful in construction management, a weather monitoring system must have remote connectivity, so contractors can make informed decisions by having live data available via any internet-connected device.

Key Features of Construction Site Weather Monitoring Systems:
• Live wind speed measurement viewable on any internet-connected device
• Instant mobile alert wind notifications
• Records all weather data, ready for download if required to justify delivery delays due to the weather.

Additional Weather Factors to Consider in Construction
Most weather risks in construction are related to the wind, but there are other factors that must be kept under watch. Extreme temperatures are dangerous for workers, and they can limit the ability to concentrate. Very low temperature also threatens equipment, since it reduces the loading capacity of many components.
